Creating A Lightweight Backpacking Gear List

Options > | Articles Home | Gear Shop

The movement into the realm of "Ultralight Backpacking" has become more and more popular. Reducing the weight of your gear not only makes life a little easier, but the reduction in fatigue can improve the quality of your overall experience as well.

For those of us who aren’t quite ready to strap on a pack with no hipbelts or sleep in a bag that’ll fold down small enough to fit inside a thimble, we’ve come up with a potential gear list that will still get your overall pack weight down to a more reasonable level. The equipment we have chosen will be for a weekend trip.

Lightweight Weekend Gear List

Item: Weight:
Kelty Shadow Backpack - [M] or [W]
Integral Designs SilTarp2 8 x 10
North Face Kilo Sleeping Bag(Down)
Thermarest Z-lite Sleep Pad
MSR Pocket Rocket Stove
Snow Peak Titanium Cookset
Snow Peak Titanium Spork
Katadyn Hiker Water Filter
Platypus Hydration Reservoir - 3L/100 oz
Black Diamond Ion Headlamp
[M]3lbs. 10 oz - [W]3lbs. 8 oz
14.0 oz
33.0 oz
15.0 oz
3.0 oz
7.0 oz
1.5 oz
11.0 oz
2.0 oz (empty)
1.0 oz
Approximate Total Weight 9 lbs. 1 oz.

This is a fairly basic gear list which obviously doesn’t include food, water, or extra clothing. You may also decide you would prefer a tent rather than a tarp, which will add roughly 3 to 4 lbs. Therefore, total weight will still be higher, but this is a good example of lightweight essentials and should set you on the right track for developing your own list of gear.
