The movement into the realm of "Ultralight Backpacking" has become more and more popular. Reducing the weight of your gear not only makes life a little easier, but the reduction in fatigue can improve the quality of your overall experience as well.
For those of us who aren’t quite ready to strap on a pack with no hipbelts or sleep in a bag that’ll fold down small enough to fit inside a thimble, we’ve come up with a potential gear list that will still get your overall pack weight down to a more reasonable level. The equipment we have chosen will be for a weekend trip.

This is a fairly basic gear list which obviously doesn’t include food, water, or extra clothing. You may also decide you would prefer a tent rather than a tarp, which will add roughly 3 to 4 lbs. Therefore, total weight will still be higher, but this is a good example of lightweight essentials and should set you on the right track for developing your own list of gear.
