Tent Care and Maintenance

Options > | Articles Home | Gear Shop

Most quality tents should hold up to the rigors of the outdoors for quite some time. There are a few things you can do to maintain your tent to help ensure it lasts.

Caring for your tent is very much like the care given to your backpack. Once your trip is over, set your tent up at home and follow a few simple steps.

  • Brush loose dirt from inside and outside the tent.
  • Clean the exterior and/or interior with cold water and mild soap.
  • Rinse the tent thoroughly, allowing it to dry completely.
  • Always store your tent in a cool, dry, dark place. Exposure to humidity and sunlight can damage the materials.
  • The zippers should be cleaned with a damp cloth to remove dirt.
  • Apply a small amount of silicone to the track and pull.
  • Inspect your tent for holes and tears. Repair as needed.

A little time spent maintaining your tent after a trip can help it last for many adventures to come, and save you money in the long run.
