Selecting a Sleeping Bag
- A mummy style sleeping bag is usually prefered for backpacking because
it takes up less space and rolls up smaller.
- Choose a sleeping bag rated for the climate you'll be in. For instance, a
32F bag. That's what it boils down to really, knowing the expected low temperature
of the area you'll be in.
- Choosing a bag rated for slightly cooler temps than you'll be
in may also be a good idea. You can always lay on top of the bag or
unzip it if it's a little too warm, and you'll be protected should the temp fall lower than expected.
- Select a sleeping bag made of synthetic fibers inside and out.
A flannel bag, or a down filled bag, once wet; will stay that way
for quite some time. Assuming of course, with the down bag, that
the outer shell has a whole or tear in it allowing moisture to enter. Synthetic fibers normally dry faster.
- One advantage of the down filled bags however, is that they are often more compactible and lighter than other types.
- The flannel bags are best suited for car camping, cabin use, and sleep-overs.
- An alternative to the sleeping bag, is the bivy sack. These provide you with a sleeping bag/shelter combination that is very lightweight.
