Overall Rating
The Word
The Snow Peak GigaPower stove received a 5 Star rating by consumers at Backcountry.com, and a combined rating of 4.5 Stars by Epinions.com users.
High points included the stove’s small size, light weight, and ease of use. At 10,000 BTUs it will boil 1 liter of water in 3.25 minutes.
There were some minor problems reported with its ability to hold a pot. The supports are not grooved which creates the possibility for your cookware to slide off. One person also reported that the auto ignition broke.
Hiker’s Corner Input
Well, let’s dive in and tackle the cons. First, it is important to find a flat piece of ground to set the stove on, and to pay close attention to how you place your pot on the supports. By observing these two points, you can reduce the likelyhood of your dinner ending up on the ground. This is really true for all backpacking stoves, and should not really be considered a problem exclusive to the GigaPower.
The broken auto ignition is a point of concern, however we do not know how it was broken in this one situation. The stove can still be lit manually, and Snow Peak does provide a lifetime warranty.
On a positive note, the stove only weighs 3 oz, making it a suitable choice for anyone using lightweight backpacking gear. It is important to remember that all canister stoves perform optimally at temperatures above 32 degree F, yet the GigaPower is capable of operating at a temperature as low as 14 degrees F. It is best suited for shorter duration treks in a 3 season situation.
