The Black Diamond Megamid Shelter is a three-person, extra roomy tent with one striking feature missing – it has no floor. Without a floor, the Megamid weighs only 3.5 pounds for an 81 square foot tent. Plus, without a floor, the Megamid tent can be pitched over a snow pit on spring ski tours to provide a shelter you can stand up in, hang out in, cook in, spill in. The Word
Very few negative comments were found about the Megamid, however one consumer did report having some trouble with the pole. On a positive note, everyone likes the weight of the shelter and its ability to withstand wind and rain. People also enjoy the versatility of the Megamid because it can be set up with the included pole, or even hung from a tree by a loop located at the shelter’s center point. Backcountry consumers gave the tent a combined rating of 5 stars, and Epinions users gave it 4.5 stars.
Hiker’s Corner Input
We’ll give the Megamid and overall rating of 4.5 simply because this type of shelter is not for everyone. The tent is floorless and provides no mosquito netting. That is an attribute that may not appeal to some people. However, if tarp style shelters are your thing, this product may be a relatively good choice for you. The material is stronger and more durable than most "ultra light" tarps, but does weigh a bit more.
The Mega Bug Shelter is available for use in conjunction with the Megamid, providing both a floor and netting to protect you from the critters.
